There are two main takeoffs. The first is located only 100 metres from the Rodella Pass cable car, near the Des Alpes refuge. As we descend the crest of the cabin, we notice the wind sleeve; on the left side (towards the Gardena Valley) is used when the wind comes from the north (the area under the two chairlifts facing north is usually used for the take-off of the free wings). The right side (Fassa Valley side) is used when the wind comes from the south and southeast and from the first hours of thermal activity, normally up to 12 hours. After this period, the breeze in the Fassa Valley gradually strengthens. Therefore, use a takeoff from south to west. This take-off is reached by turning right out of the station and the cable car and going down the path under the cable car line towards the Rodella equipped road, you can now see the wind stick. If you are coming from the Sella Pass, park the car in front of the bar near the Valentini refuge and walk for about 30 minutes. In winter, take-offs are only viable in the north and south-southeast.
The Rodella Pass area is one of the most famous starting points of the Dolomites. Even in autumn, the rock towers can be inflated here on sunny days. The Dolomites are impressive but also demanding. The rock faces are gigantic, but they can also be quite turbulent. Therefore, the area is not for beginners when thermals are boiling. The starting point is below the mountain resort. Access also on the Sellajoch by foot.
