The 'HighSide' this is the main site for recreational paragliding at Karioitahi Beach and the most popular site in Auckland due to the ease of launch and safe flying environment. Also known as 'The Main Cliff' or 'The Waterfall', 300 m north of the access road currently via cliff side walking track. 80m altitude above the beach, beautiful smooth grassy slope to launch from, top-landing possible. Leave the cable car to the left and walk under the cable car across. The launch site is a few meters off to the right and a little lower down. A windsock is available. It is an airstrip launch. There are also ropes from a tow lift on the left, but there is plenty of space. 3 to 4 gliders can be laid out comfortably. The alpine meadow has an ideal slope. Unfortunately, launching is prohibited here when there are cattle. Then you have to go a little further down to the lower launch site. No launches allowed at the summit cross! No launches allowed in the direction of the chairlift! Observe minimum distance! No take-offs in strong westerly or easterly winds! Slope take-off - i.e. turbulence with sideways wind directions! This site is mostly used in the mornings. In the afternoon the nearby Härmlekopf site is preferred instead. From the middle station of the cable car (Seegrube) at the restaurant, head west past the chairlift (approx. 150 m) and up the slope to the first small plateau (approx. 50 m)! There you will find the south-facing launch site. Watch out for the avalanche barriers to the west and the blasting rope to the east of the launch site. Directly above the small ledge in front of the launch site, thermals are released. When strong thermals develop in spring, you should take off early (before 12:30 pm), as the thermals suck in a lot of air masses and otherwise you will have a tailwind at the launch site. 50 m height difference About 3 to 4 gliders can be launched at the same time. The launch site is initially quite flat, but then drops steeply. As the steep slope became increasingly overgrown with brambles and other undesirable shrubs, the landowner was forced to have the slope grazed by Scottish Highland cattle. It was therefore necessary to erect fences and restrict the width of the starting slope to around 50 meters. Below the slope, an approx. 10 meter wide drift was created so that the animals could reach the watering hole. This drift must be flown over. The fences were mainly made of flexible plastic poles and plastic strand and should therefore not pose any risk of injury to the pilots. To ensure that the take-off slope can also be grazed, it is closed in June and October. Flights are not possible during this period.
