The eastern launch site is a beautiful, expansive grassy slope north of the mountain station and offers plenty of room for several gliders. After takeoff, you can either fly directly over the ridge toward the landing site or take the more leisurely route around the outside. Thanks to the very beginner-friendly thermals heading toward Westendorf, you can easily gain altitude and really enjoy the flight.
The Choralpe near Westendorf is a true paradise for paragliders, offering everything that makes a pilot’s heart race: impressive mountain scenery, the unique natural landscape of the Kitzbühel Alps, fantastic launch sites, and a spacious landing area right in the middle of the valley. Even the hike up gets you in the mood for flying—in summer, a leisurely 10-minute walk through the beautiful alpine landscape leads to the launch sites.
The west launch site is spacious, open, and ideal for relaxed setup and simultaneous takeoff of multiple gliders. The north launch site is somewhat more compact and steeper. Despite its alpine orientation, it is also very forgiving and is regularly used for training. Here, two gliders can usually be set up at the same time, which requires focused and considerate launching.
Thermals are often found here as early as late morning—particularly reliably to the right of the west launch site. As soon as conditions are right, a fantastic flying area opens up with impressive cross-country possibilities toward Pinzgau. But even on days with dynamic westerly winds, the expansive slope edge to the left and right of the West launch site delights with wonderful soaring conditions and long, relaxed flights over the gentle grassy peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps.
Anyone who has ever soared over the green alpine pastures of Westendorf, enjoyed the view of the Tyrolean mountains, and experienced the relaxed atmosphere of this flying area will immediately understand why you’ll want to come back here again and again.
No, please describe the northern launch site much more clearly
