St Hilaire Paragliding Sites

1- Speed-riding is permitted on all slopes after the resort has closed and all lifts have been shut down. 2- Speed-riding is permitted on the Combe and Gélinottes runs when these are closed to skiers, and only during speed-riding slots agreed with the St Hilaire resort manager or his deputy. 3- Nets and information panels to secure the piste will be set up by speed-riders as shown on the plan. In other words - 1 information panel and a closing net at the top of the Combe trail, - 1 warning net preceded by an information panel on the cross-country ski trail at the Gélinottes junction, - 1 signal net preceded by an information panel on the La Combe cross-country ski trail, - 1 closure net at the bottom of the La Combe piste before the Sauzet lift departure station. The eastern edge of St Hilaire provides early updrafts on days with weak winds. You can fly north or south along the impressive limestone flanks as you please. The steep dragon ramp almost reminds of a cliff start. If the sun has hiked over the zenith, the airfields Allevard, Val Pellouse, Chamaux or L´Ebaudiaz offer themselves afterwards on the way back to the Lac d´Annecy. If the wind is weak around the west, the way to the Lac de Aiguebelette is worthwhile. The flight along the Crete northwards to the Dent du Chat alias Katzenzahn and back pays for the extra kilometers. The South takeoff is the second main takeoff of St Hil. It is slightly higher than the North and East take-offs. It is a large grassy takeoff which is to be preferred as soon as the thermal activity is in place or by south wind. Moreover it is to be proscribed by strong north wind or strong north valley breeze. The takeoff is downwind when you have an established North, look at the windsock of the school slope to see the prevailing wind! Everyone thinks why this world famous flying site is mentioned here? When the sun is above the zenith, the flying sites Allevard, Val Pellouse, Chamaux or L'Ebaudiaz on the way back to the Lac d'Annecy are ideal. If the wind is light around west, it is worth going to Lac de Aiguebelette. The flight along the Crete northwards to Dent du Chat aka Katzenzahn and back will reward you for the extra kilometers. The slope breeze progressively feeds the launch pad and can become cyclic. The take-off is located downwind of the thermals that start on the cliff, so it is possible that the windsock at the top of the access path indicates downwind and that the two windsocks at the break are facing each other. Take-off next to the tourist office parking lot. The take-off is downwind when the wind is northerly. Look at the windsock on the school slope to see which way the wind is blowing! Vol mountains With thermal you can fly there from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (in summer). Possible orientations are in between S-E to N-W, best is from S to W. After parking at Col du Coq, it's another 30 minutes on foot. Altitude 1740m

South winds over 20 km/h cause a lot of turbulence in the Perquelin valley. Haymaking (2 times, at haying time) at St Hugues landing, see display at landing. In general, the farmer removes the windsock when the meadow is not available. Two available : West & SouthWest take off should be avoided when ski resort is open.Accessible by road then path, or cable car during winter and july-august.No difficulty, large take off. Chamechaude take off from the South face above the Habert. Massif: Chartreuse Departure altitude: 1000m Altitude of the take off: 1700 m D+: 700 m Climbing time: 1h30 Take off: the take off is 100m above the Habert de Chamechaude on a flat area. GPS coordinates: Latitude 45.2822 Longitude 5.7896 Ideal from S to SW; do not take off from W, you will be downwind of the cliffs on the right of the takeoff. Atterro du Sappey-en-Chartreuse The service thermal is located at the level of the ochre cliff which is above the village of Le Sappey At Le Sappey and park on the car park in front of the church. Go up on foot towards the top of the village (Le Churut) and take the forest road of Emeindra. At Bruchet (altitude 1130m) take the road to the Habert de Chamechaude. At the Habert, go up as best you can towards the Arnaud breach until you reach a flat area at 1700m. Altitude 1582m

Take-off is from the top of the Barioz runway. The take-off area is surrounded by trees. So be on the lookout for possible turbulence. Contracted landings are possible either to the south or north of the Flumet basin.
